The shallow end of existence

You get a lot of junk sent to you when you have a baby, not counting all the junk the baby ends up needing. Amongst the junk was an invitation to hold a naming ceremony. I'd never heard of such a thing, and just supposed if you didn't want a christening or thanksgiving then you'd just get on with it. But this is like those only with all references to God removed.

Very strange this need to imitate the spiritual while removing all the substance. It can't be good for a society to live in the shallow end of existence all the time.
