New Shoes

Reflecting on Lily Allen's song The Fear made me wonder what other recent songs could be considered ode's to consumerism or indeed contain some critique. One that came to mind was Paolo Nutini's New Shoes with it's line: "
Hey, I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything is right"
Something wrong in your life? Then what you need to do is buy something new and it will all change. That is essentially the basic message of most product advertising. It's quite a claim. ANy other suggestions?

Oh, there's so many songs along those lines...

One that I particularly detest is 'Miss Independent' by Ne-yo. The basic premise of the song is that he likes this woman because she provides for herself and pays her own way... meaning presumably that he won't have to. Implicit selfishness?

Sorry - forgot about this when typing the previous comment. There's also the song 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga. It doesn't matter if you're blind drunk - everything will be fine if you keep dancing...

Rant over, for now!

For the other side I quite like Willy Mason's 'oxygen'. It has a line that goes 'We can be richer than industry, as long as we know there are things that we don't really need.'
